A week after the invasion of Czechoslovakia, East German television still was unable to show a suitable news clip from its occupied neighbor. As far as its viewers were concerned, it did not have to: 80 per cent of all East Germans followed the Czechoslovak crisis on West German television. Evening after evening, East German TV's star commentator, Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler, appeared before the cameras and, spoke of scenes in Prague, Czech Republic that his audience had just seen on the West German channel. East and West German television are similar in their program make-up, politics, sports, culture, light entertainment and children's programs, occupying roughly the same amount of time in each.
