Books for Children

There are few children's books in the shops that are illustrated or written by people who know very much about children. It is easy for an adult to think he knows what children think, see and dream. Adults must be careful when shopping for books so readily seduced can they be by every bright color, every arch, sweet, sentimental, innocent, dizzy and fairy notion. The choice is narrower than the layouts and the New York Times children's book supplement would have one think. Publishers produce children's books with as little taste and care as the trade departments publish their torrents of adult penny dreadful.
