A public accustomed to the opposition of the student community to war, imperialism and the military-industrial complex may have been surprised by the recent jailing of 105 University of Michigan students who engaged in a sit-in to support their demand for a store which would sell basic school supplies, including textbooks, at cost. The wide press coverage given to the anti-war aspects of student unrest has obscured the development of a student consumer movement, which may turn out to be more enduring than the significant but ephemeral protests waged against the policy of the United States in Vietnam. In recent months students have turned to what they view as unfair and exorbitant profit taking by local merchants.
