The Black Lung Rebellion

It is the traditional act of rebellion. Since no miner would think of going below without water, dumping it means he is personally on strike and is appealing to his comrades to join him. They always do. Coal miners, because they are both rural people and industrial workers, combine perfectly the elements of Populism that leads to an easy, willing militancy. They stick together and they are infinitely loyal to their own totems. So when one man dumped, they all dumped, and within a week the coal fields of West Virginia were awash with rebellion, linking more than 40,000 miners in the biggest wildcat strike of modern times. It closed the industry.
