This article focuses on the contributions of David Smith in the field of arts. Smith regarded himself, if not exactly as a pioneer, at least as the descendant of pioneers. A significant feature of the Smith show, from the point of view of the museum, is that, for the first time, the top one and a half rotations of the ramp spiral are in public use. Previously the top of the spiral had been used for storage and conservation, which services are now located in the cramped and fussy slab added to the back of the museum on the 89th Street side.
