This article focuses on efforts to improve police-community relations in the U.S. A progressive police-community relations department can help to ease the abrasive contacts between police and citizens if it has the support of high police officials. They have the authority to advance policemen on the basis of appropriate behavior and community respect, as well as for a good arrest record. Lieutenant Dante Andreotti developed the San Francisco Police Community Relations Program in San Francisco. He sent his men into the communities, told them to roll up their sleeves and play an active role in community life.
