This article presents author's experience of police brutality as a journalist. According to the author, a current theory has it that urban blacks in the U.S. have suffered so much for so long at the hands of city cops because they are ignorant of their rights. The truth is much simpler, the citizen doesn't have any viable rights in such cases. American society will never be peaceful so long as significant portions of that society are systematically terrorized by the police. There will be no peace because, as blacks have learned and students are learning, the cops are above the law and the only satisfying way to respond to their violence is with violence of one's own.
