There has been no politician J. McCarthy walkout from the Michigan Democratic Party since Chicago, Illinois. At the call of the state McCarthy organization and the Michigan Conference of Concerned Democrats (MCCD) about 450 dissident Democrats convened in Detroit, Michigan, Cobo Hall on September 28, 1968, to proclaim "The New Democratic Coalition of Michigan." While much of the U.S.' demoralized Left flirts with fourth parties or reads writer Che Guevara's diary, the New Democrats have embarked in Michigan on an experiment whose grand purpose is nothing less than the radical reconstruction of the Democratic Party. The activists who met in Detroit to lay plans for this effort were, with few exceptions, middle-class white reformers from MCCD and McCarthy chapters throughout the urban areas of southern Michigan.
