The American pox is insignificant. One of the consequences of American history up to now is that Americans have a large and growing number of people who suspect that they don't mean anything or who are certain that they don't. The ones of these who are white make up the politician George Corley Wallace constituency, and after spending several hours among them at the October 13, 1968, rally at the Cow Palace the author's sense of them takes him a good deal by surprise. The author expected the rally to produce a distinct charge of reactionary political outrage that the author would recognize and be touched by.
