This article discusses various biological and socio-economic aspects of sterilization. Sterilization is the surgical procedure by which one renders a man permanently incapable of fathering a child or a woman from concerning a baby, without at the same time affecting other sexual functions. In other words, it is permanent birth control, in contrast to contraception which is temporary birth control. Since sterilization in no manner involves either the testes or the ovaries, it does not alter the physiology of the, man or woman. Socio-economic indications for sterilization are less clear-cut. Involuntary plurality of children has social drawbacks for many and economic drawbacks for most.
