It is already a commonplace, when speaking of current art, to take for granted the existence of an international style, or styles. At least the rapprochement of local idioms, the critical and ideological amalgamations one have witnessed on both sides of the Atlantic for about three years, have eliminated the focus that nationalism had once given to art criticism. Not has been the idea of originality been jeopardized, but individuality itself is getting to seem a quite romantic concept, in view of the belittling imitations that even a mildly inventive style nowadays endures as soon as it appears.
