In this article, the author focuses on the problem of growing cases of explosions on railroads and highways in the U.S. by presenting concerned data and possible causes. He reports that on January 15, 1965, a freight train crossed a broken switch near Springville, Alabama, and derailed. One car of this train, carrying liquefied petroleum gas, exploded causing further explosions of two more cars. About 42,000 pounds of butane blew up. A total of forty explosions have been reported in one year. Derailments, reportedly, caused more than half of these accidents and they have been increasing steadily-from an average of 264 a month in 1964 to 457 a month in 1968.
