Peru: Oil and the Army

The Latin American countries have colonial economies based on the export of raw materials in exchange for manufactured and processed goods. Both import and export trade are oriented toward and dependent upon the United States. Peru experienced its third military coup in twenty years when the military of that country overthrew a democratically elected civilian government. In all three cases the seizure of power was associated with steadily deteriorating economic conditions, accompanied by inflation, wage-price spirals, labor unrest, strikes and political violence.
