Despite pessimistic prediction, the YM-YWHA-sponsored symposium on "The State of American Poetry Today" rose to the fine level of chaos. John Simon the moderator observed that the topic required a cast of thousands, like a De Mille epic, but that the Poetry Center had only a modest stage. This seemed to him regrettable. However, he had not anticipated the barbarian hordes into which Gregory Corso would materialize. Little would be said before the evening and the ranks dissolved, but much was revealed. As though to provoke amenities, Simon formally introduced the poets on the panel. Poets like James Dickey and Jack Gilbert participated in the symposium.
