A Few Sticks of Dynamite

Last week a television reporter asked a striking employee of the Florida East Coast Railway Co. (FEC) what he would do when his unemployment pay runs out in April, 1964. "I guess," he said, "I'll buy a few sticks of dynamite." The worker's reply got little notice; violence has become common place on the FEC. The line has been on a hot-war footing for more than thirteen months. In one way, the 2,000 workers are on strike. In another way, they are locked out by the railroad's operator Edward Ball. The strike-lockout is so confused and illogical that there is really no one phrase that would describe it in modern labor-relations terms.
