Battle for a Border

The present explosive situation on the Sino-Indian borders arises primarily from China's denial that the boundaries between Tibet and India have been clearly demarcated. Though the dispute covers technically the whole length of the Sino-Indian frontier, the present pressures are confined to two areas: Askichin in Ladakh on the northwest and the McMahon line to the north of Assam between Bhutan and Burma. The Government of India, while fully aware of the Chinese claims with regard to the McMahon line on the Northeast Frontier, had no reason to think and could certainly not foresee that any dispute would arise in respect of the barren and unoccupied Askichin area of Ladakh.
