Texas

This article presents information on a pre-election survey in Texas on those contests which are of more than local interest and which are likely to affect national policy either immediately or in 1964. This is the state's first general election since Reconstruction in which a Republican nominee for governor is a serious mathematical threat. Two-party in national elections and tentatively moving in that direction on the state level, Texas has never voted heavily in non-Presidential years. The November turnout has traditionally been light - around 800,000. A small vote this time, the old tradition of one-party politics, could make this a considerably closer election than many are predicting. Texas Democrats simply aren't accustomed to the idea of Texas Republicans, and the Republicans are anxious and well organized.
