The article discusses some recent issues in the United States. Without being unduly cynical, one may wonder, on reading that the United States is giving "aid" in the amount of $15 million a day to the government of South Vietnam, how much of this largess gets down to the peasants whose "loyalty" it is supposed to purchase. Vietnam, of course, is only one outlet for the billions that are poured out year after year to fight communism all over the world. The suburbs have been pictured as Elysian havens to which people flee from the congested, noisy, crime-ridden city. A survey of New York suburbs by writer Clarence Dean in the Times shows that some of the wealthiest areas in the country are increasingly plagued by poverty.
