This article comments on recent hearings of the U.S. House of Representatives' Un-American Activities Committee in Chicago. Illinois. However, if the hearings, held May 25-27, were short on entertainment, they did constitute an unforgettable demonstration of the tactics and purposes of the Committee which President Harry S. Truman once called "the most un-American thing in America." The performance began even before the five-man subcommittee hit town. Committee rules prohibit the release of witnesses' names before they are sworn in, but nearly two weeks in advance of the hearings, the names of those subpoenaed were published in "Chicago's American."
