Reductio ad Vietnam

The trouble with the Vietnam situation is that no one has, yet had the courage to state the real case for the full-fledged "hard-nose" approach. But no one has thus far had the courage to argue the case of the U.S. commitment on grounds of plain pragmatism and historical precedent. The case for limiting the horrors of war is old stuff. One is reminded here of the German dele gate to the 1899 Hague Peace Conference who argued against such limitations on the ground that making war more humane would incite more people to resort to it.
