The U.S. maritime industry is experiencing a series of strikes and walkouts. In U.S. some pessimists are inclined to believe that the merchant marine will disintegrate in the next few years. There are three main reasons why the U.S. merchant marine is now facing a crisis. The first has come about through the rapid expansion of international trade since the war. The second cause of the crisis is that, faced with the Administration's yawning indifference to the merchant marine, U.S. ship owners looked around for a way to beat the rap. The third reason why things have gone sour is that the merchant marine simply does not interest the American public.
