Schism Within a Dilemma

Politician John V. Lindsay notwithstanding, the elections of November 2 offered no compelling sign of a resurgent Republican Party. To be sure, voters in New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio, expressed a strong sense of dissatisfaction by turning against the administrations in power. But they did so only within limits, and they were looking not so much for Republicans as for new faces. Though New Yorkers elected Lindsay, they rejected his two running mates. They kept the City Council Democratic with a substantial 30-to-7 majority, and actually unseated an incumbent Lindsay supporter as borough president of the Bronx.
