This article focuses on the political career of Senator George Smathers from Florida. For fourteen years, ever since he turned on and defeated Claude Pepper, the Senator who got him started in politics, Smathers has moved upward along an arc of growing influence. George Smathers, at 50 is still a wavy-haired fashion plate and in only slight physical decline. Indeed, some political handicappers feel that he no longer trails Senator Richard Russell. As a result of what it considers Russell's bungling of the civil rights, Smathers seems to overtake the mighty Georgian.
