What the Democrats Aren't Saying

During a debate at Columbia University in New York, N.Y., three Democratic candidates were asked to give their views on a proposal that the U.S. commit itself to a policy of no first use of nuclear weapons. Democratic candidates Walter Mondale and Gary Hart said, give or take a quibble, that the U.S. could not renounce its nuclear option until the North Atlantic Treaty Organization builds up its conventional capabilities to balance those of the Warsaw Pact countries. Democratic candidate Jesse Jackson said that it is a good idea for sure but his manner conveyed little familiarity or concern with the issue.
