The article discusses the emerging role of banks in securities trading. Until recent years banks were relatively uninterested in securities trading and corporate underwriting, but they are now racing to get into the action. The reason for the rush is a trend usually referred to as "securitization," which has brought about a change in the way credit is pumped through the body economic. In its narrow definition, securitization means pooling debt to be sold as a security-mortgages, for instance, are pooled and sold to pension funds rather than held by banks.
