Crime in the New South Africa

The political fallout from South Africa's crime problem and shortcomings of responses to it are pervasive. Crime is politicized, after all, in countries with far longer histories of democracy than the new South Africa. The probability that some ANC defectors will be joining the multiracial United Democratic Movement in disenchantment with the ANC's ineffectiveness at controlling crime is evidence of the health of democracy there, not its weakness. Violent crime is as much a reality in South Africa today as it was in the bad old days and far more widely and sensationally decried. Within the brutal context of apartheid, violence was often perceived as a logical and honorable recourse.
