A Federal jury in Selma, Alabama, acquitted Albert Turner, Spencer Hogue and Evelyn Turner, the voting rights activists. The Justice Department had charged them with conspiracy, altering absentee ballots, voting more than once and committing mail fraud. Underlying this case and similar investigations in neighboring counties is the emergence of black political power in counties that until recently were dominated by some of the Deep South's strongest white elites. In moving against Albert Turner, the government targeted one of the South's toughest and most savvy grassroots political leaders.
