This article focuses on the book "Home Is Where We Start From: Essays by a Psychoanalyst," by D.W. Winnicott. Winnicott's writing is characterized by a shrewd ingenuousness that is consistent with his therapeutic aim, to protect the privacy of the self in the making of personal sense and, by the same token, personal nonsense. The need to be both intelligible and hidden that he found in his patients is reflected in his style, which is always evocative before it is provocative. In making psychoanalysis more accessible to the uninitiated, Winnicott often developed his most interesting papers on unexpected subjects.
