Abstract

Minority Report

Hitchens, Christopher | February 22, 1986 issue

This article focuses on how even as Fleet Street backs British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher with ever greater ardor and hysteria, she is visibly losing her grip. She parted with two of her senior ministers in a bitter fracas over the future of the Westland helicopter company, and she temporarily lost her parliamentary majority in a tremendous fight over the British automobile industry. In both cases the issue was control of British manufacturing by American capital. Lately Britain has been overtaken by a fashion for fortification. There is increasingly less pretense that certain establishments are under British control, as often as not they are guarded by armed and uniformed Americans.
