The article presents information on the book "Midair," by Frank Conroy. In this book, Conroy puts the weird stuff from the past, the things he is most estranged from, enclosing it in what is more intimate and present, his current self. Despite the unevenness, Midair's existence is a kind of victory. It proves that Conroy has managed to avoid turning the sensitive-adolescent version of himself. This collection makes Conroy's work tell an oddly coherent and satisfying story. His childlike dedication to getting things just right gives his new stories their special tension, their scary balancing of emotion and formal precision.
