The article presents information about the book "Lionel Trilling and the Fate of Cultural Criticism," by Mark Krupnick. Krupnick's book is the third study of the man since his death, in 1975. The most productive of the New York intellectuals, the most scholarly the most challenging, the most challenging and elusive, he was unique in his set for having a Ph.D. and being a teacher by profession, rather than by expediency. He was not a Luftmensch who had fallen on his feet in the Ivy League but a bourgeois gentilhomme and a literary scholar who had kept fast company in his youth.
