U.S. President Ronald Reagan knows a thousand ways of being sentimental, hypocritical and cheap. His underlings and imitators do their poor best, but none can approach him in the insincere exploitation of the emotions of others. Lately both he and his groupies have had yet another stab at an exposed nerve, the nerve that twitches uncontrollably whenever the three letters "MIA" are uttered. In the week following Memorial Day there was a feast of synthetic ballyhoo, most of it picking up and repeating the themes of superpower self-pity that have become so familiar of late. ABC did a lachrymose special on MIA's and a further program from the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.
