Comments on the controversy surrounding U.S. presidential candidate Howard Dean's remark that he wanted "to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." Reactions to the remark by other Democratic candidates, including John Edwards, John Kerry and Dick Gephardt; Argument that Dean was not making a racist appeal, but rather meant that he wanted to win over working-class Southern whites who vote Republican against their own economic interests for misguided racial reasons; Discussion of how Dean should have handled criticisms of his remark; Discussion of whether Dean has a chance of winning a majority in the South.
