The article focuses on the political condition of Colombia. The assassination last month of leftist leader Jaime Pardo Leal has pushed Colombia another step closer to political anarchy. Pardo's death brought to almost 500 the victims of a bloody war on the Patriotic Union (U.P.), a new left-wing party that is challenging the traditional political monopoly of the Liberals and Conservatives. Presidential candidate of the U.P. in last year's election, Leal was killed when his car was ambushed by gunmen near Begotá. His murder ignited nationwide protests, including a twenty-four-hour labor strike that shut down the country.
