The article focuses on political conditions of the U.S. and around the world, as of November 7, 1987. The conflict over Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba was more immediately globe threatening than the disagreement over U.S. lasers in space. In the name of labor solidarity, and for the mess of dues it will extract from a million or more teamster members, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations has taken a giant step backward in the struggle to refashion a humane and effective union movement.
