The article discusses the book "The Last Intellectuals: American Culture in the Age of Academe," by Russell Jacoby. The book charges that the academy has swallowed up a generation of thinkers, leaving an important hole in the culture of the United States. The author's writing is full of aphorisms and sharply worded dismissals of thinkers and theories that usually command immediate assent. Especially refreshing about the book is its skepticism about the radicalism of the avant-garde. The authors discussions of the intellectual consequences of suburbanization and gentrification are superb.
