The article discusses the book "The Child in Time," by Ian McEwan. The book begins in the public realm. The main character of the book, Stephen Lewis, a celebrated children's book writer, heads to a meeting of a subcommittee of the Official Commission on Child Care. His 3-year-old daughter, Kate, was snatched at a South London, England supermarket. The book ends with a hard earned but frustrating affirmation that a child is born, redeeming the past. The author has cast his lot with creation, with adulthood, ordinary life and political concern.
