Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador have formed a Union of Banana Exporting Countries in imitation of the petroleum producers’ cartel. These countries control two-thirds of the world's banana production and supply most of the bananas sold to the United States, where bananas are the cheapest and most plentiful fruit. The three American banana companies have kept prices low through their ownership of plantations and control of marketing. It is possible that the producers may be able eventually to disperse with the marketing monopolies, as is happening with coffee and oil.
