The Pain of Being Two

The article presents information on several books by John Edgar Wideman. "A Glance Away" interweaves two stories, a young black man named Eddie Lawson returns to his hometown after a year in the South kicking a drug addiction, at the same time, a middle-aged white college professor named Robert Thurley tries to face up to his homosexuality, a failed marriage and alcoholism. The book opens with an impressionistic prologue, all speed and biblical tone. Wideman's next novel, "Hurry Home," just as plainly addresses the tension between academy and street. Wideman produced one more novel during the 1970s--"The Lynchers," a bareknuckles survey of the vigilante mind--but it wasn't until the first volume of "The Homewood Trilogy," in 1981, that he found some of the answers to the questions posed in the earlier books.
