The article focuses on the book "No Ivory Tower: McCarthyism and the Universities," by Ellen W. Schrecker. Schrecker's book demonstrates once again how McCarthyism was fed by the complicity of the institutions it chose as its targets. But during Hollywood's darkest days, the most craven movie producer could scarcely have surpassed the standard of intellectual capitulation set by the president of Yale University. McCarthyism, Schrecker argues, was a process, it began with hysterical rhetoric and the glare of television lights at the U.S. Congressional hearings. But it was the second, less publicized part of the process that carried the real sting.
