The American steel industry has all but collapsed. Since mid-1984 employment in steel has dropped from 248,000 to 185,000, and progressive efforts to stop the razing of facilities, such as the giant Dorothy Six blast furnace, have failed. But in the Monongahela Valley, members of the Tri-State Conference on Steel, progressives, workers, union leaders, clergy and elected officials, continue to battle for the region's economic future. Their most successful effort to date has been the establishment of a Steel Valley Authority as the mechanism for social planning and for the development of a leaner, publicly accountable steel industry.
