Postmodernist art is so dense a tissue of references to past art-of quotations, appropriations, emulations, borrowings, transfers and iterations-that the term "eclectic" can no longer have a use in the working vocabulary of the art critic. The enjewelment of the flesh, the escape into the status of gold and emeralds, casts the eroticism of these works in a special light. It is not the robust, randy kind of eroticism, where the flesh sings, nor the prurient eroticism of the pornography it some times resembles. It is, instead, the eroticism of the mystic, a technique for slipping out of the flesh, where intense pleasure-or pain-is a means rather than a goal.
