The article presents information on Federal Bureau of Investigation and the new drug law. Ever since President Ronald Reagan was elected, F.B.I. and Justice Department officials have pushed to reduce the amount of information in agency files that the government must release. Liberals agreed to the amendment in exchange for provisions that excuse representatives of the news media and of educational institutions from fees for searching files. Then came the anti-drug bill came along, a perfect vehicle in which the right could roll its agenda forward has warned that the Freedom of Information Act enables criminals to obstruct investigations and target informants, lobbied congress in support of the amendment, which passed overwhelmingly.
