The Long Arm of the Kuomintang

It is informed that since 1949, the Koumintang, Taiwan's ruling Nationalistic Party, has kept the media under close rein. According to Hsu Jung-shu, an opposition legislator, government confiscations, bannings and suspensions have hit 90 percent of all nonparty publications. A Taiwanese human rights group estimates that an average of twenty government acts against the press occur every month. Direct censorship has also been stepped up. It is also informed that the long arm of the Taiwanese government has reached Chinese-language publications in the U.S. The evidence is still conflicting, but the prospect has stirred up the Taiwanese-American community.
