The article discusses the motion picture "Les Misérables," directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The picture is a musical version of Victor Hugo's novel. The production is beautifully designed by John Napier and it is well acted, with striking performances by Charles Laughton as Les, Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Alun Armstrong as the greasy, thieving innkeeper. Les Misérables concerns the life of Jean Valjean, an ex-con who goes straight and eventually becomes mayor of his town. The article also mentions the National Theatre's play "Pravda," by Howard Brenton and David Hare. It is a hilarious satire about Fleet Street and what happens when one newspaper after another is bought . up by a right-wing South African entrepreneur who manipulates them all to his own end.
