The article discusses the U.S. laws related to maternity benefits with reference to a suit filed in Federal District Court by California Federal Savings and Loan Association in Los Angeles. The bank had violated the 1978 California Fair Employment Housing Act which states that employers must provide up to four months unpaid leave for any female employee affected by pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. But the association charged that the state law contravened the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The court also agreed. This case reveals the fact that the U.S. is far behind other nations on the matter of maternity benefits. The U.S. women are still waiting for such laws.
