The article focuses on the book "The Crucible of Race: Black-White Relations in the American South Since Emancipation," by Joel Williamson. Joel Williamson, professor of history at the University of North Carolina, has written what purports to be a major reinterpretation of black-white relations after the Civil War. Williamson is the author of two previous works in this area, After Slavery, a study of Reconstruction in South Carolina, and New People, a book concerning miscegenation and the mulatto experience in America. His background would therefore seem auspicious preparation for this book, which is at the very least humane and well intentioned.
