The article presents information on the British Empire and the United States, and lays emphasis on the article "The Myth of the British Importance," by Joseph Kraft. Kraft thinks that by becoming an empire, the United States was doing the British, and everyone else, a big favor. Just as British schoolchildren were once taught about the white man's burden, so now one reads, gurgling with mirth if he can avoid bursting into tears, that "American power" is "the shield of independence in Latin America." And what thanks does the United States get for all its trouble? Just like the subjects of Great Britain's lost dominion, the new generation of natives is sullen with ingratitude.
