The article presents a comment on a conference on the journal of critical opinion. A question is raised as what is the journal of critical opinion and who reads it. The conference asked the big questions first. Author Victor Navasky provided some clues in his opening address. During the ensuing panel discussion, editor Joseph Epstein disparaged the term, quoting editor V.S. Naipaul's description of a character in Guerrillas who had "a great many opinions, but taken together, these did not add up to a point of view." Under his editorship, Epstein claimed, The American Scholar had become a journal with fewer opinions but with a distinct point of view.
