The investment banker Felix Rohatyn opened spring training with the Mets and, in seventeen appearances, failed !to impress. In the field his range was poor and his arm weak, teammates jocularly nicknamed him Sieve. Rohatyn would have doubtless been cut had six members of the Mets infield not chartered a fishing vessel that became lost in a storm and was washed ashore in Cuba. Rohatyn was not used by manager Dave Johnson until May 2, when he was sent in to play the ninth inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds. A sudden epidemic of groin pulls forced Johnson to send Rohatyn up to pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth of a 4-4 game with the Atlanta Braves.
